SIGNs – Studies in Graphic Narratives

An Archive of a Scholarly Experience

SIGNs – Studies in Graphic Narratives was a scholarly project active from 2008 to 2016, growing out of a shared interest among researchers and collectors in the historical development of graphic storytelling.

Among the formative experiences behind SIGNs were the study days held at the Musée de la bande dessinée in Angoulême and the creation of a mailing list devoted to Platinum Age Comics. These initiatives provided opportunities to exchange ideas, share research materials, and develop a collective interest in the study of early comics. They also helped establish the intellectual community from which the journal emerged.

Following the journal’s closure, the project continued through the publication of reprints of early comics, accompanied by dedicated exhibitions. This archive preserves the memory of that broader experience, providing access to the journal’s issues and the reprints subsequently published under the SIGNs project.

By making these materials available, the archive seeks to preserve a record of a particular moment in the development of comics studies and to keep the work undertaken through SIGNs accessible to researchers and readers interested in the history of graphic narratives.
